Winter Hauling: What Cold, Salt, and Ice Do to Webbing and Chain

Every winter the same question comes across the counter: do straps get weak in the cold? The honest answer is reassuring and then complicated — the materials hold up fine; winter attacks everything around them.

What cold actually does

Polyester webbing keeps its strength in cold weather — subzero temperatures do not meaningfully weaken the fiber, and steel chain and hardware are similarly comfortable at highway winter temperatures. If cold alone broke tie-downs, nothing would move in January. The real winter problems are water, salt, and what freezing does to a working system.

Ice: the tension thief

Webbing soaks up water, and water freezes. A wet strap tensioned at the dock can freeze stiff on the road — and frozen webbing behaves like cable, holding its shape instead of hugging the load. Worse, ice on the load itself melts and compresses under strap pressure, and suddenly your tight strap is a loose one. Winter loads settle more, which means re-tension stops matter more: check tension in the first fifty miles, every time, and again when a warm shop thaws what the road froze. Frozen ratchets are the same story — water in the mechanism locks the pawls; keep the moving parts lightly lubricated and stored dry.

Salt: the season-long attack

Road salt is the true winter enemy, and it works on the metal, not the webbing. Salt spray sits in hook radii, ratchet springs, and chain link crowns, and corrosion follows — the same corrosion that is an automatic retirement flag in the inspection guide. The counter to salt is boring and effective: rinse gear with fresh water after salted-road trips, let it dry before it goes in the box, and give chain and ratchets a light oil through the season. Gold-chromate Grade 70 resists surface rust well, but no finish outlasts a winter of neglect.

Winter habits that keep loads legal

  • Brush snow and ice off anchor points and the load path before rigging — a strap seated on ice is seated on nothing.
  • Expect settling; plan re-tension stops. Fifty miles, then normal intervals.
  • Store straps dry. A wet strap coiled into a toolbox comes out frozen or mildewed; both cost you.
  • Inspect harder in spring. The end of salt season is when a full hardware inspection pays off — and chain has no wear indicators, so look at every link crown for wear and rust pitting.

Gear that winters well

Dense, quality webbing sheds water better and abrades slower than bargain weave — the domestic-webbing difference covered in this guide — and rated hardware with proper finishes shrugs off a salt season that eats no-name hooks. Always rig within the rated Working Load Limit. Inspect straps and chain before each use and remove them from service if cut, gouged, excessively worn, corroded, or deformed.
