How Do I Use a Ratchet / Tie-Down Strap?
We're often asked how to use tie-down straps or ratchet tie-downs, and the answer is straightforward:
- Select the right strap for your load based on its size, weight, and Working Load Limit.
- Inspect the strap for any signs of damage or wear before each use.
- Position the load securely and identify sturdy anchor points to attach the tie-down.
- Thread the loose end of the webbing through the ratchet mandrel and pull it tight to remove slack, then crank the handle to build tension between the anchor points and the load. Wind two to four wraps of webbing onto the mandrel. Use no fewer than two and no more than four.
- Once the load is secure, close the ratchet handle to lock the mechanism so the tie-down can't loosen in transit.
- Double-check the tension and security of every tie-down before you head out, and re-check after the first few miles.

What Is Your Manufacturing Process for Your Straps?
Our straps are made to order in the United States. We start with high-tenacity polyester webbing, cut it to the exact length you need, and sew each end on heavy-duty industrial machines. The correct end fittings are then attached, and the finished assembly is tagged with its Working Load Limit before it ships.
Are Your Straps Domestic or Imported?
Our straps are American-made. The webbing is manufactured in the USA, and every strap is cut and sewn right here in America.
What Materials Are Your Straps Made From?
Our tie-down straps use high-tenacity polyester webbing, chosen for its strength, low stretch, and resistance to abrasion and UV. End fittings and hardware are sized to match the webbing and the job.
What Is the Weight Limit for Your Straps?
It depends on the strap. There isn't one single number. Every assembly is rated with a Working Load Limit (WLL), the maximum load it's designed to secure in normal use. For web tie-downs the WLL is one-third of the minimum breaking strength, a 3:1 design factor that builds in a safety margin (chain and sling assemblies use different design factors). You'll find the WLL printed on each strap's tag and listed in the product's specifications, so you can match the right strap to your load. Never exceed the WLL.
How Many Straps Do I Need?
That depends on the size and weight of your load. As a general rule, federal cargo-securement regulations require the combined Working Load Limit of your tie-downs to be at least half the weight of the cargo, plus a minimum number of tie-downs based on the load's length and weight. When in doubt, use more tie-downs, and always follow current DOT and FMCSA regulations for your specific load.
What Measurements Do I Need Before Ordering a Custom Strap?
Three things:
- Overall length, measured end to end including the fittings.
- Webbing width, such as 1" or 2".
- End fittings, meaning what you want on each end (flat hook, J-hook, S-hook, snap hook, D-ring, and so on).

What Is Your Warranty Policy?
We stand behind our workmanship. If a Mid MO Strap product reaches you with a manufacturing or material defect, contact us and we'll make it right. Unused items can also be returned within 30 days under our return policy. Our warranty does not cover normal wear, cuts or abrasion, chemical or UV damage, or any load carried beyond the product's Working Load Limit. Tie-downs and rigging are wear items, so inspect them before every use and retire them when damaged.
How Quickly Will My Order Be Processed?
