Working Load Limit vs. Break Strength: What the Numbers on Your Strap Actually Mean
Strap packaging loves the big number. "10,000 lb strap!" reads better than "3,333 lb strap" — but they can be the same strap. Here is what the two numbers actually mean and which one you should buy by.
Break strength: the lab number
Break strength (sometimes "breaking strength" or "ultimate strength") is the load at which a brand-new assembly fails on a test bench — straight pull, perfect conditions, no wear, no shock. It is a real measurement, but it describes the strap's last moment, not its working life.
Working Load Limit: the number you use
The Working Load Limit (WLL) is the maximum load a tie-down is rated to restrain in service. For web tie-downs the industry standard sets WLL at one-third of break strength — a 3:1 design factor. That margin is not padding for marketing; it absorbs everything the bench test ignores: road shock, edge wear, UV, knots and twists, and the load shifting against the strap at highway speed.
So a strap advertised at 10,000 lb break strength is a 3,333 lb tie-down. That is the number stamped on the label, and it is the number enforcement officers read at a roadside inspection.
The chain that is only as strong as its weakest link — literally
WLL applies to the whole assembly: webbing, ratchet, hooks, and whatever you anchor to. The lowest-rated piece sets the rating for everything. A heavy strap on a light hook is a light tie-down. Every component we sell lists its own WLL on the product page — check the weakest one, because the DOT will.
What the rules require
Federal securement rules (FMCSA) require the combined WLL of all tie-downs on a load to be at least half the cargo weight. Four straps rated 3,333 lb each give you 13,332 lb of aggregate WLL — enough, on that rule, for about 26,000 lb of cargo, though load shape, blocking, and common sense usually call for more restraint than the minimum.

If a product listing anywhere only gives you break strength, divide by three and you will be close to the truth.
Always rig within the rated Working Load Limit. Inspect straps and chain before each use and remove them from service if cut, gouged, excessively worn, corroded, or deformed.
