Axle Straps and Wheel Nets: Tying Down Vehicles the Right Way
A car is a spring on wheels. Strap the body down and the suspension keeps bouncing underneath, working every strap looser with each cycle. That is why professional carriers secure vehicles by the axles and wheels — the parts that do not move relative to the trailer once they are cinched.
What an axle strap is
A short loop of heavy webbing — typically 2" wide and around two feet long — with a rated attachment ring on each end. It wraps around the axle, control arm, or frame-rated tie-down point, and both rings come back to your ratchet strap's hook. The strap hugs steel that was built to take load, and your main tie-down pulls from there down to the trailer. Ours are built with a forged delta ring on each end, with a protective wear sleeve version for axles with sharp castings and brake lines nearby.
Why the sleeve version exists
Axles are not friendly to webbing: casting flash, brake hardware, heat shields, road grit. A wear sleeve is a sacrificial jacket that takes the abrasion so the load-bearing webbing underneath stays rated. If you tie down vehicles more than a few times a year, the sleeve version pays for itself the first time you retire a sleeve instead of a strap. The four-point setup
The standard vehicle tie-down is four points, one per corner:
- An axle strap around each axle end (or each manufacturer tie-down point).
- A ratchet strap from each axle strap down to the trailer anchor — deck D-rings on a trailer, or the rated slots on a wrecker deck.
- Straps pulled in opposition: fronts pulling forward-and-down, rears pulling rearward-and-down, so the vehicle cannot walk in any direction.
- Tension until the suspension settles slightly — snug and planted, not crushed.
Federal rules treat light vehicles like other cargo (aggregate Working Load Limit of at least half the vehicle's weight, minimum two tie-downs — four points clears both easily); heavy vehicles and equipment over 10,000 lb carry their own four-point requirement with independent securement at each corner.
Matching the ratchet side
The main strap doing the pulling should be 2" webbing with hardware that fits your deck — swivel J-hooks, snap hooks into D-rings, or flat hooks on a rub rail. Always rig within the rated Working Load Limit. Inspect straps and chain before each use and remove them from service if cut, gouged, excessively worn, corroded, or deformed.
