V-Bridle Tow Chains Explained: Setups, Hooks, and Ratings
Watch any experienced wrecker operator hook a casualty and you will see the same shape appear: two chain legs spreading from the truck to two points on the vehicle, meeting at a single pull. That V is the bridle, and it is the standard for a reason.
Why two legs beat one
A single chain pulls from a single point — fine until the load shifts sideways or the attachment point objects to taking everything alone. The V-bridle splits the pull across two attachment points, keeps the casualty tracking straight behind the truck, and halves what each connection carries in a straight pull. The wider the V, the more the geometry loads each leg, which is why bridle legs are kept long enough to keep the included angle sensible — the same angle math that governs lifting slings, covered in our sling angle guide.
The anatomy
Our bridles are built on Grade 70 transport chain — 24" legs as the standard — with an oblong master link at the apex for the winch hook or recovery point, and your choice of hook on each leg end. The classic configuration runs 8" J-hooks with T-J combo frame hooks; variants swap in 15" J-hooks for deeper reach, mini-J and Datsun hooks for smaller frame holes, grab hooks, or R-T-J cluster ends that carry three hook styles per leg so one bridle fits whatever rolls up. Which hooks for which casualty
- J-hooks (8" and 15") — the tow classics: spring shackles, frame slots, and factory tow holes. The 15" reaches through deeper frames.
- T-hooks — the slotted holes in unibody pinch welds and frame rails.
- Mini-J and Datsun hooks — smaller frame holes on light vehicles.
- Grab hooks — shorten a leg by grabbing back into the chain itself, which is how you level a bridle on uneven attachment points.
- Cluster ends (R-T-J) — all of the above on one leg; maximum flexibility per hookup.
Ratings under a real pull
Grade 70 is transport chain — rated for securement and towing pulls, not overhead lifting (the G70 vs. G80 guide draws that line hard). The bridle's rating is governed by its weakest hook, and the effective load per leg climbs as the V flattens. Recovery work adds shock loading on top, which is why serious recovery rigs stage snatch blocks — like our fully-welded G70 snatch block — to redirect and multiply line pull instead of yanking harder on the bridle.

Always rig within the rated Working Load Limit. Inspect straps and chain before each use and remove them from service if cut, gouged, excessively worn, corroded, or deformed.
