How Ratchet Straps Are Made: Inside Our Missouri Shop
A ratchet strap looks simple — webbing, hardware, stitching. The rating on its label is earned by how those three come together, and that work happens on benches, not in a spec sheet. Here is how a strap goes together in our shop in Cuba, Missouri.
It starts with the webbing
Everything begins as a roll of polyester webbing — American-made, which is not a slogan on our floor but a supply decision: consistent weave, consistent dye, consistent behavior under the needle, roll after roll. Polyester is the tie-down fiber because it barely stretches, shrugs off UV, and does not soak up water. The width off the roll sets the strap's class — 1" for light duty through 4" for heavy haul — and the weave itself is where the strength lives. Black wear indicators woven along the face give a quick visual check as the strap ages.
Cut, fold, and thread
Webbing is cut to the ordered length with a hot knife — the heat seals the polyester ends so they cannot fray back into the weave. Then the ends are built: the webbing wraps through the hardware eye (hook, ring, or fitting) and folds back on itself. That fold-over is a load path, not a hem, and its length is sized to the webbing width. On the ratchet side, the fixed end gets sewn to the ratchet's mandrel the same way, and the long end is hot-cut clean so it threads the drum easily for the customer.
The stitch is the strap
The sewn joint is where a tie-down earns or loses its rating. Heavy bonded polyester thread, industrial needles, and stitch patterns — box-and-cross patterns and multi-pass bar tacks — that spread load across the full width of the fold instead of a single line of thread. Pattern, stitch count, and thread weight are matched to the webbing width, because a joint that is right for 1" webbing is undersized for 4". When the label says the assembly carries its Working Load Limit, this seam is what backs the claim (the WLL guide explains that number's 3:1 margin).
Hardware and the weakest-link rule
Hooks, rings, ratchets, and fittings each carry their own rating, and the finished assembly is rated by its weakest piece. That is why the hardware bin matters as much as the sewing bench — pairing a heavy strap with a light hook would quietly downgrade the whole build. Always rig within the rated Working Load Limit. Inspect straps and chain before each use and remove them from service if cut, gouged, excessively worn, corroded, or deformed.
