Wear Shield: Why Every Sling Eye We Sew Ships Protected

Ask anyone who inspects lifting gear where web slings fail, and you will get the same answer: the eyes. The loops at each end live the hardest life on the sling — so we made a decision most suppliers charge for. Every sling eye we sew ships with Wear Shield reinforcement. Standard. No charge, no checkbox.

Why eyes die first

A sling's body mostly touches the load — broad, distributed contact. The eyes touch hardware: hook throats, shackle pins, crane fittings. All the lift's tension concentrates where the eye bears on steel, and every lift saws the same small patch of webbing against the same radius. Add choker hitches — where the sling cinches through its own eye — and the eye works against both steel and itself. Body webbing wears over years; unprotected eyes can wear out seasons sooner, taking an otherwise healthy sling out of service.

What Wear Shield is

Wear Shield is a sacrificial wear layer sewn onto the eye's bearing surfaces during manufacture — extra material between the load-bearing webbing and the hardware it rides. It takes the abrasion, the load-bearing weave underneath keeps its strength, and inspection stays honest: wear shows up on the shield while the rated webbing under it stays readable. Same philosophy as the wear sleeves and corner protectors in our edge-protection guide — spend the cheap layer, save the rated one — except built in at the bench instead of added at the trailer.

Why it is standard and not an upsell

Because the industry's version of this — eye protection as a paid option — produces predictable results: buyers skip it, eyes wear early, slings retire young, and the replacement order funds the cycle. We sew slings twenty feet from where we sell them, and warranty conversations about worn eyes are conversations nobody enjoys. Building the protection in costs us less than those conversations cost everyone. As our shop put it when the rule was made: on other people's slings it is an option — on ours it is the standard.

What it does not change

Wear Shield extends service life; it does not amend physics or inspection duty. Capacity still comes from the sling's rating and your hitch and angle (the angle guide does that math), lifting gear still lifts and tie-downs still do not (that line, drawn), and every sling still gets inspected before every lift, shield included.

On every type, every time

Type III flat eyes, Type IV twisted eyes, endless loops (the types guide picks between them) — configure any of them to your length and capacity in the custom sling builder and the Wear Shield is already in the build. Rigging hardware to match lives in sling hooks.

Always rig within the rated Working Load Limit. Inspect straps and chain before each use and remove them from service if cut, gouged, excessively worn, corroded, or deformed.
