Recovery vs. Towing vs. Securement: Different Jobs, Different Ratings
A truck is stuck, a truck is being towed, a truck is riding on a trailer — to the parking lot observer it is all "chains and straps." To the gear, those are three completely different jobs, and the fastest way to break equipment (or worse) is to hand one job's tool to another job.
Securement: static and steady
Tie-downs hold cargo that is already where it belongs. The load is static; tension is applied once and maintained; the forces are the g-forces of braking and cornering. Ratings are Working Load Limits with the tie-down design factor, the arithmetic runs on aggregate WLL (the worked examples cover it), and the gear is ratchet straps and Grade 70 chain with binders. Towing: rolling and alive
Towing moves a vehicle on its own wheels behind another. The load is dynamic but controlled — steady pulls, moderate shocks from starts and road bumps. This is Grade 70 territory too, but built for the job: V-bridles that split the pull across two attachment points, J-hooks and T-hooks matched to frame slots, and hook clusters that adapt to whatever the casualty offers. Securement straps still show up here — holding the casualty's wheels on a rollback deck per the vehicle tie-down guide — but the pulling is chain work.
Recovery: the shock-load world
Recovery frees a stuck vehicle, and it is the outlier: forces spike far beyond the vehicle's weight when a pull snatches against suction, mud, or a high-centered frame. Recovery straps are built to stretch — nylon that stores and releases energy smoothly — the exact opposite of tie-down polyester, which is built not to. That is the critical distinction: a ratchet strap is never a recovery strap. Low-stretch webbing turns a snatch into a shock spike, and hardware not rated for it becomes the projectile. Recovery-rated gear, rated shackles, and pulls routed through equipment like a snatch block to redirect and multiply line pull — that is the recovery kit. And its mirror-image rule from the lifting world: recovery gear never lifts, either (why tie-downs never lift covers the logic).

- Holding cargo on a trailer: ratchet straps, G70 chain and binders — rated by WLL, tensioned once, re-checked en route.
- Towing a vehicle: G70 bridles and tow hooks — steady pulls, geometry matters, hooks matched to the frame.
- Freeing a stuck vehicle: recovery-rated, energy-absorbing gear — never tie-downs, never lifting slings, rated attachment points only.

Always rig within the rated Working Load Limit. Inspect straps and chain before each use and remove them from service if cut, gouged, excessively worn, corroded, or deformed.
